Availabilities:

2024 unit offering information will be available in November 2023

Unit description

Examines the responses of bodies or systems of bodies at rest and the internal stress-strain response of fluids and solids when subjected to loads.

Unit content

Module 1: Properties of solids and fluids

Module 2: Stress and strain in static fluids

Module 3: Loads, freebody diagrams and equilibrium

Module 4: Internal forces and friction in solid materials

Module 5: Axial loads and torsion

Module 6: Bending and buckling

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1define and calculate load actions and frictional forces acting on bodies in equilibrium
2define and calculate the forces acting on and in a static fluid
3define and calculate internal stresses and strains in solid materials
4analyse axial and shear forces, bending moments, and torsional and buckling behaviour in simple structures subjected to static loads

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. define and calculate load actions and frictional forces acting on bodies in equilibrium
  2. define and calculate the forces acting on and in a static fluid
  3. define and calculate internal stresses and strains in solid materials
  4. analyse axial and shear forces, bending moments, and torsional and buckling behaviour in simple structures subjected to static loads

Teaching and assessment

Notice

Intensive offerings may or may not be scheduled in every teaching period. Please refer to the timetable for further details.

Southern Cross University employs different teaching methods within units to provide students with the flexibility to choose the mode of learning that best suits them. SCU academics strive to use the latest approaches and, as a result, the learning modes and materials may change. The most current information regarding a unit will be provided to enrolled students at the beginning of the teaching period.
