Unit description
Leads students through the processes required to plan and initiate an independent research project that will make an original contribution to knowledge in their engineering discipline. Students are required to conduct a literature review on a chosen topic within their discipline and develop a research proposal.
Unit content
Students are required to work independently on their chosen research topic under the guidance of their academic supervisor.
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | |

2 | define appropriate aims, scope and methodology for a proposed research project to address an identified gap in existing knowledge in your area of engineering specialisation |
3 | present a coherent written proposal that describes the background, aims, rationale, methodology, and anticipated outcomes for your proposed research project |
4 | identify the resources and approvals needed to successfully complete your proposed study. |
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
