Unit description

Develops students’ capability to undertake a full scale engineering project. This Capstone Project unit represents the culmination of the Engineering degree, integrating the knowledge and skills gained throughout the course, including engineering principles, planning and design, communication, teamwork and management. The unit will also see the students finalising their ePortfolios by writing statements of competency to address the 16 Stage 1 Engineers Australia Competencies. Skills in writing resumes and addressing selection criteria will also be developed.

Unit content

Formal content for this unit will include the following topics:

  • Major project formulation, planning and execution
  • Report writing
  • Writing statements of competency
  • Interview skills
  • Writing a resume and addressing selection criteria

These will be integrated throughout this project-based unit.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1apply systematic processes to formulate, design and manage the undertaking of a major engineering project
2formulate an overall plan of attack including alternative conceptual solutions and methods to critically evaluate them and then perform the design calculations and integration necessary to deliver the project outcome
3demonstrate awareness of the professional and ethical responsibilities in producing the required design outcome
4collate the results and present clearly and effectively the proposed solution, conclusions and/or recommendations in both written and oral formats
5demonstrate the attainment of the 16 Stage 1 Engineers Australia Competencies through a written report.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
