Builds on introductory thermodynamics and fluid mechanics units to further students’ understanding of the fundamentals of classical thermodynamics and heat transfer, and covers applications in mechanical engineering thermal systems. The unit revises the second law, introduces chemical reactions and combustion, and addresses power cycles, refrigeration, air-conditioning and liquefaction. Modes of heat transfer and heat exchanger design are addressed.
