Availabilities:

2024 unit offering information will be available in November 2023

Unit description

Develops a detailed technical knowledge of the complex hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes that operate in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean. The combined influence of these processes is used to explain and interpret the geomorphology of fluvial and coastal landscapes.

Unit content

1. Hydrodynamics of natural streams

2. Fluvial erosion, sediment transport and sediment deposition

3. Geomorphic characteristics and evolution of fluvial systems

4. Hydrodynamics of the coastal ocean and mechanics of water waves

5. Erosion, transport and deposition of marine sediments

6. Geomorphic characteristics and evolution of estuaries and beaches

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1Model and interpret the movement of water in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean
2Model and interpret the movement of sediments in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean
3Proficiently use parameters needed to characterise hydrodynamics and sediment transport dynamics of rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean
4interpret and evaluate causal relationships between hydrodynamics, sediment transport processes and the geomorphic evolution of rivers, estuaries and beaches.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Model and interpret the movement of water in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean
  2. Model and interpret the movement of sediments in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean
  3. Proficiently use parameters needed to characterise hydrodynamics and sediment transport dynamics of rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean
  4. interpret and evaluate causal relationships between hydrodynamics, sediment transport processes and the geomorphic evolution of rivers, estuaries and beaches.

Teaching and assessment

Notice

Intensive offerings may or may not be scheduled in every teaching period. Please refer to the timetable for further details.

Southern Cross University employs different teaching methods within units to provide students with the flexibility to choose the mode of learning that best suits them. SCU academics strive to use the latest approaches and, as a result, the learning modes and materials may change. The most current information regarding a unit will be provided to enrolled students at the beginning of the teaching period.
