Unit description

Introduces students to common forest operations and principles of operations management. Students are exposed to legislative and other requirements, project management tools, budgeting, civil works including road network infrastructure design, and go on to apply these elements in field exercises.

Unit content includes

Forest operations planning and goals of operations management

Using project planning tools

Managing time, money and people in forest management

Building forest roads, bridges, and controlling runoff

Operations relating to provision of forest recreational and conservation services

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate skills in project management in forests including stakeholder identification and consultation; preparation of project plans including milestones and work schedules; preparation of budgets and expenditure review; contingency plans
2demonstrate knowledge of, and skills in business management principles; legislative compliance and contracts as these relate to forest operations
3be familiar with forest operations and relevant challenges specific to provision of recreational and conservation services
4be familiar with forest operations and relevant challenges specific to provision of recreational and conservation services

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
