Unit description

Introduces surveying and spatial technology field practice as it relates to civil engineering. The types and use of basic surveying equipment including dumpy levels, total stations and GPS rovers will be introduced. Proper note-keeping techniques and computations are studied.

Principles of survey information in civil engineering

Topographic surveys using GPS equipment

Undertaking basic surveys using a total station

Transferring and manipulating survey data

Learning outcomes

describe the principles of surveying including the key reference points, coordinate systems and origins

perform basic operations with survey equipment used in civil construction

work in teams to collect and manipulate survey data for subdivision layout design.
