Unit aim

Introduces students to clinical diagnosis, going beyond the understanding of the common manifestations of disease to promote skills in clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and safe clinical practice. Material is presented in a problem-based learning format, with a significant portion embedded within an interactive software package.

Unit content

Topic 1: Integrated clinical problem solving approach to diagnose disorders of the gastrointestinal system and

               accessory organs (the liver, exocrine pancreas and spleen)

Topic 2: Integrated clinical problem solving approach to diagnose disorders of the respiratory system (including

               ear, nose and throat)

Topic 3: Integrated clinical problem solving approach to diagnose disorders of the endocrine system

Topic 4: Medical investigations - clinical biochemistry, clinical haematology, clinical microbiology, clinical

               immunology and medical imaging

Topic 5: Issues for special populations - paediatrics and geriatrics

Topic 6: Selected issues in clinical pharmacology

Topic 7: Safety issues
