Unit description

Presents and applies principles of learning and systematic instruction that underpin occupational therapy assessment and intervention in all areas of practice. This includes understanding how people learn individually and in groups; understanding behavioural change and how this can be influenced; developing skills in assessing tasks, developing intervention using purposeful activity and instructional strategies used by occupational therapists.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1apply concepts and theories in the group work process and give constructive feedback to individuals about their leadership styles
2prepare and conduct a group activity, demonstrating beginning level skills of group leadership and identify personal traits as a group leader
3apply concepts and theories relevant to individual learning and systematic instruction
4identify and define purposeful activity, and describe its use in occupational therapy
5develop an appropriate instructional program for an individual case, using applied behaviour analysis and conduct an analysis of an occupation, activity or task from a real life situation
6describe how occupations, activities and tasks can be analysed
7develop skills in setting goals, selecting, and grading occupations, activities and/or tasks to achieve these goals in therapeutic settings.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
