Unit description
Examines the relationship between occupational performance, the psychosocial dimensions of mental function and related environmental and social factors that impact on mental health. The theory and practice of occupational therapy assessment and intervention will be analysed and applied to address occupational performance concerns associated with mental health and well-being.
Unit content
- Overview of the psychosocial domain of practice.
- Overview of relationship between occupational performance and mental health.
- Impact of drug and alcohol abuse on occupational performance.
- Service models and areas of occupational therapy practice in mental health.
- Global trends, federal and state policies, and other practice trends such as the use of evidence, partnerships and consumer focused practice - implications for people with mental illness and mental health practice.
- National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce (2002) Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation, standards and guidelines.
- Concepts of wellness, recovery and resilience.
- Mental Health Outcome and Assessment Tools (MH-OAT) and Occupational Therapy assessments in mental health.
- Application of theoretical frames of reference &/ or conceptual practice models in occupational therapy programs in mental health.
- Individual and group intervention approaches (theory & practice).
- OT treatment/program planning in mental health using case studies.
Learning outcomes
