This unit contains content on mental health and psychological trauma which may be triggering for some students. Please consider this when enrolling in the unit.

Unit description

Introduces students to a holistic understanding of mental health, with a central focus on how to promote overall wellbeing as future healthcare providers. Students will be introduced to determinants of mental health and illness, highlighting the lived experience of mental health and how this informs service development and quality of care. Students will learn empathetic and trauma informed understandings of people's experience of mental health, how to view and respond effectively to people seeking to resolve mental health problems, and how this can be realised in the Australian healthcare system.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate an understanding of the lived experience of mental distress across the lifespan and how this can inform practice and service development

identify and collaboratively discuss how holistic, person-centered understandings of mental wellbeing, health and illness can direct effective provision of care

discuss the principles and practices of trauma-informed practice

discuss the role and impact of the mental healthcare system and integrated care
