Unit description

Develops a foundational knowledge of the principles of practitioner self-care, safety in healthcare and health assessment. With this knowledge, students are provided with an opportunity to work alongside their interdisciplinary colleagues to acquire, practise and demonstrate foundational communication, observational and assessment skills that underpin clinical practice. Practice in laboratory sessions and simulated rehearsal prepares students to carry out foundational assessment skills ensuring a focus on patient safety and minimising adverse events.

  2. Introduction to healthcare safety and adverse events
  3. Foundations to clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning – the cycle
  4. Infection prevention and control
  5. Vital signs
  6. Foundations of health assessment and effective communication

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1reflect on personal strategies to maintain self-care and develop emotional intelligence to ensure safe professional and clinical practice
2demonstrate an awareness of the principles of developing health communication techniques related to clinical practice, cognisant of the need for cultural sensitivity and awareness
3demonstrate safe and competent practice for a range of foundational skills
4discuss the components of clinical reasoning frameworks

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
