Unit description

Introduces students to both the benefits of physical activity in all aspects of health, and the potential causative relationships between sedentary behaviour and poor health outcomes. Students will learn about the impact of public policy in the promotion of physical activity and exercise. Students will be introduced to Exercise & Sports Science Australia [ESSA] and the opportunities and pathways in the field of sport and exercise science in conjunction with evidence-based principles as they apply to exercise. A practical focus will be placed on community-based exercise as students learn and practise the basics of coaching and group exercise instruction.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

explain the benefits of physical activity on physical, mental and social well-being

describe the role of health policy and physical activity promotion in reducing sedentary behaviour

describe the role of ESSA and the importance of evidence based practice to Sport and Exercise Science

present and demonstrate opportunities for community-based physical activity
