Unit description

Examines the physiological responses of the body to various exercise stresses and the adaptations which occur within the body as a result of repeated exposure to these stresses.

Unit content

Lecture content:

  • Skeletal muscle function
  • Circulatory responses to exercise
  • Respiratory responses to exercise
  • Bioenergetics and exercise metabolism
  • Cardio-respiratory fitness
  • Anaerobic power
  • Muscular strength and flexibility
  • Body composition
  • Environmental physiology
  • Fatigue


Laboratory content:

  • Pre-exercise screening and ergometry
  • Heart rate and blood pressure
  • Lung function assessment
  • Energy expenditure
  • Submaximal exercise testing
  • Blood sampling and assessment
  • Anthropometric assessment
  • Body temperature and sweating

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate an understanding of the general physiological responses of the body to various exercise stresses and environmental changes;
2demonstrate an understanding of typical physiological responses and adaptations to exercise and training of different types, duration and intensities;
3demonstrate a level of competency in using various exercise testing apparatus and methods in assessment of physical fitness and defining physiological responses and adaptations that occur as a result of exercise and training;
4be able to report and interpret physiological data and address common myths usually associated with exercise performance;
5demonstrate a level of theoretical knowledge necessary for involvement in exercise prescription, training and conditioning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
