Unit description

Explores the scope of practice for a clinical exercise physiologist within the domains of cancer and neurological disease, including the role of exercise in assisting clients to manage their condition. Also develops skills for clinical assessment, teamwork skills, written and verbal communication skills, critical reasoning skills around the design and delivery of safe, evidence-based exercise interventions for cancer and neurological conditions.

  1. Role of exercise for cancer management
  2. Applied exercise assessment and programming for cancer clients
  3. Neurological disease
  4. Assessment and monitoring of the neurologically affected client
  5. Exercise programming and prescription for optimal outcomes in the neurological client
  6. Managing the neurological client: a multidisciplinary approach

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1explore the diagnosis, treatment and side effects of cancer treatment and impact on capacity to exercise
2explore the spectrum of neurological health conditions and explore diagnosis, treatment and side effects that will impact capacity to exercise
3develop assessment skills, exercise programming skills, and clinical reasoning for clients with oncology or neurological conditions
4gain an understanding of the value of interprofessional practice, applying the principles to considering the broader healthcare needs of an oncology or neurological client

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
