Aspects of consultation, interview and testing techniques, health education and counselling will be studied with an emphasis on developing practical skills.

Unit content

  • General considerations for the target pathologies – overview and introduction
  • Overview of medical and surgical intervention and the impact of participation in exercise.
  • Evidence associated with mode, intensity, duration, frequency, volume and progression for a pathological condition
  • The construction of evidence based safe and effective exercise plans
  • Incorporation of goal setting, medical history and clinical status
  • The provision of first aid, and appropriate reporting within multidisciplinary settings.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1distinguish and apply clinical reasoning to the construction of exercise interventions for medical pathology
2demonstrate an understanding of the role of multidisciplinary approaches including medical and surgical interventions and the implication of medication regimes upon clinical status
3select, modify and demonstrate the application of safe exercise programs to affect positive changes in exercise ability and functional capacity including the inclusion of exercise for the treatment of pathology
4formulate responses and management strategies for the provision of first aid and the appropriate reporting to referrers, primary health providers and other health providers
5evaluate the evidence base for mode, intensity, duration, frequency, volume and progression of exercise interventions for chronic conditions
6communicate effectively, via both verbal and non-verbal methods, with clients/patients and service users, medical professionals and other allied health professionals
