Unit description

Provides opportunities to apply established strategy frameworks and tools to contemporary organisational contexts to understand the pursuit of sustainable competitive advantage. The unit encourages students to critically engage with the latest thinking about the realities of strategy as a complex social practice characterised by politicised processes. The unit integrates and applies knowledge gained in previous units.

  4. External analysis: The macro environment
  5. External analysis: The industry environment
  6. Internal analysis
  7. Business-level strategy
  8. Corporate-level strategy
  9. Implementing strategy
  10. Corporate governance, business ethics and strategy
  11. Corporate social responsibility and strategy

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1define and discuss strategy, including its historical development, theoretical variation, and its place in the practice of management and business
2critically appraise and apply sound principles of ethical leadership and social responsibility to the strategy process
3leverage knowledge gained in earlier units in working effectively with others to develop and apply skills in conducting strategic analysis, and subsequently, developing and communicating strategic options across a variety of industries and competitive situations
4apply strategic thinking and practice in relation to the particular context of international business
5apply critical thinking to the practice of strategy and be able to communicate and manage strategic change and implementation processes.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
