Unit description

Introduces students to the reality that conceptions of culture differ. The Aboriginal conception of a living culture is presented through examples from traditional historic and contemporary events. Practices in Aboriginal cultural strengths and resilience, from spiritual connection to everyday humour, are investigated.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1summarise how conceptions of culture differ across cultures
2identify the dimensions of culture including the ways that culture imparts reality and significance to social ‘goods’
3demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal resistance and resilience within colonial contexts.
