Unit description

Introduces students to recent theories of human development and childhood trauma through group exercises and activities, supported by informed presentations and discussions. The teaching methods employed support students to identify the short and long-term consequences of childhood trauma. Various therapeutical responses are examined and explored, in relation to addressing the effects of childhood traumatisation.

Topic 2: Cross-cultural child raising
Topic 3: Socio-historical concept of childhood and traumatisation
Topic 4: Emotional first aid/emotional literacy
Topic 5: Healing responses to therapies

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate an understanding of the definitions and theories of childhood traumatisation and emotional first aid in working with children

discuss and evaluate the importance of play in a child's life and its role in transforming trauma

demonstrate an understanding of creative and narrative therapies in working with families and children.
