Unit description

Examines the links between trauma and substance abuse, childhood trauma and mental illness and the genetic and trans-generational transmission of trauma. Explores the ways that trauma interacts synergistically with other afflictions contributing to the burden of disease. Trauma recovery and case studies in individual and group resilience are explored.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1identify and evaluate trauma responses using a range of approaches from theory and practice
2analyse factors in the continuation of trauma at social and individual levels
3synthesise and propose models and modes for resilience building and trauma recovery.
