Unit description

Introduces students to the Indigenous Knowledge principles related to country, culture and ancestry. Indigenous Australian cultural expressions and multiple levels of connectivity will be examined. Students will also investigate the interaction between Indigenous and non-Indigenous expressions of self, place and belonging through the concepts of cultural and social sustainability.

Module 1: Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing

Module 2: Land rights

Module 3: Country and ontology

Module 4: Linking health of country and health of people

Module 5: Self-positioning and country

Module 6: Contemporary caring for country, culture and heritage

 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate a critical understanding of the policies and practices of heritage institutions and their alignment with principles and protocols for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and culture
2develop strategies including critical and ethical, self and group, evaluation skills necessary for effective practice in cultural heritage
3describe and analyse the significance of personal values and ethical practice in establishing and sustaining affirming community relations.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
