Unit description

Presents Indigenous voices in the critical analyses of past and current colonial education practices in Australia, in terms of their relationship to Indigenous peoples and Indigenous education models and practices. Focuses include the history of colonial education in Australia, the impact of colonisation on Indigenous teaching and learning, governmental response to Indigenous educational needs and best practice policy making. Students will develop critical analysis and advocacy skills enabling them to engage the discourse around education delivery and practice within Australia and beyond.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1examine the complex manifestations of racism and other factors that impact on an Indigenous Australian student's academic performance
2critique the role of cultural protocols and practices within education, specifically in regard to Indigenous education
3appraise literacy and numeracy strategies that are designed to address the needs and aspirations of Indigenous learners
4research and critically analyse Government policies that provide innovative frameworks for addressing Indigenous Australian education initiatives, including community-based education.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
