Unit description

Provides an overview of Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and other Indigenous research methodologies. Students will engage with relational and ontological foundations of research. Methodological pathways that implicitly address ethical, procedural and community protocol issues will be shared. Research methods presented will situate participants to develop appropriate, effective and culturally safe research practices within Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and other Indigenous community contexts.    

Unit content

Topic 1: Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and other Indigenous research methodologies
Topic 2: Principles and methods for Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and other Indigenous research
Topic 3: Pathways that transform conceptions of research for the benefit of Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and other Indigenous research methodologies
Topic 4: The development of relational standpoints for research futures

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1examine and explain methodological principles of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and/or other Indigenous research
2evaluate the assumptive basis of research methods and situate approaches that culturally strengthen Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander autonomy across research contexts
3critically analyse methodologies and methods to establish relational standpoints and pathways to knowledge that ethically empower Aboriginal. Torres Strait Islander and other Indigenous communities

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
