Unit description

Examines the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) to manage earth resources. Students will focus on the principles, sensor characteristics, extraction of information from remotely sensed data and applications of remote sensing with relevance to GIS applications. Students will develop practical spatial data analysis skills in the laboratory to solve problems relevant to environmental management.

  1. Remote sensing of the environment – an overview

  2. Electromagnetic radiation principles

  3. Elements of visual image interpretation

  4. Multispectral remote sensing systems

  5. Active and LIDAR remote sensing

  6. Discipline specific remote sensing (vegetation, water, soils or urban landscape)

  7. Image classification

  8. Integration of remotely sensed data and geographic information systems

  9. Strategies for problem solving in resource management
