Unit description

Explores how innovative technologies have the capacity to influence and shape the business environment. It investigates particular emerging technologies and real-world cases to improve student understanding of the impact and the role that technologies can play in society, and how this is moulded by individuals’ interactions and perspectives with and through technology. Students will explore different aspects of theory and concepts to learn how they can be applied in different situations to understand the impacts of technology on enterprises.

Topic 1: Ubiquitous technologies and digital disruption in modern business
Topic 2: Social technologies and their influence on social capital
Topic 3: Cloud computing and big data redefinition of business processes
Topic 4: Preparing for disruptive innovation
Topic 5: Robotics and artificial intelligence
Topic 6: Quantum computing: the future frontier of business

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1identify and analyse key technologies that have emerged and shaped the business world.
2evaluate the impact of disruptive innovation in order to plan, develop and implement strategies for competitive advantage.
3propose and predict, by applying theory, the impacts that emerging technologies will have on different industries, and understand and define how best to respond to the challenges and opportunities that disruption offers.
4discuss trends, developments and critical issues including legal, social, ethical, cultural, human, and security implications of key emerging technologies within enterprises.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
