Unit description

Covers the architecture, design and services of an Internet-based information system while the focus is on the Internet-of-Things (IoT). The unit provides students with advanced concepts underlying the design, implementation and management of IoT systems. Students will learn to design IoT-based information systems for applications in smart home, smart city and smart environment.

Unit content

Module 1: The Internet of Things (IoT) architectures and components
Module 2: IoT sensors, actuators and microcontrollers
Module 3: IoT edge, fogs and clouds
Module 4: IoT networks, protocols and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
Module 5: Design an IoT  system for smart environments
Module 6: Ethics, security and privacy issues of IoT systems.
 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1discuss functionality of the components of an IoT-based information system.
2analyse requirements and select suitable IoT architectures, designs and technologies for an IoT application.
3design IoT-based information systems for applications in smart home, smart city and smart environment.
4examine issues related to ethics, security and privacy issues of IoT-based information systems.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
