Unit description

This unit examines the current legal and regulatory frameworks governing a variety of human-animal interactions in Australia. It strongly emphasises animal welfare, the legal protection of animals, law reform, and activism. The content is supported by case studies, and students will engage in activities based on real-world scenarios.

Module 1: Introduction: philosophical and legal frameworks of animal law

Module 2: Companion animals

Module 3: Animals in agriculture

Module 4: Animals in entertainment, sport and recreation

Module 5: Animals in research and teaching

Module 6: Animals in the wild, animal advocacy and law reform.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify and critically analyse the major theoretical approaches to the protection of non-human animals

explain the legal status of animals and how State laws govern different types of human/ animal interactions

apply relevant legal principles to a range of issues and contexts involving human/animal interactions

critically evaluate the role of the law in both the protection and exploitation of animals, identifying areas in which the law needs reform and strategies to achieve such reform.
