The School places considerable emphasis on the gaining of insights and practical skills through the completion of a significant period of time working within the legal environment. Law Placement is a unit that aims to help students gain insights into the role of legal practitioners and the practice of law and to support their transition to admission as a legal practitioner.
This unit requires students to complete a 15-day supervised placement within a legal practice environment. The syllabus for this subject has been modelled on the work experience component typical to Practical Legal Training programs. Students are responsible for making all arrangements in relation to their placement. If a student has difficulty locating a placement or would like to discuss how they should approach securing one, they should contact the unit assessor to discuss this. Once a placement is confirmed, students should contact the unit assessor as soon as possible, and before their placement, to provide the details of the placement arrangements they have made. Please use the Placement Form which is on the MySCU learning site for this unit. Students may NOT commence the placement until approval is granted and confirmed by the School.
NOTE WELL: Any time spent in the placement prior to gaining approval from the unit assessor will not count towards the 15-day time period required by this unit. University insurance arrangements applicable to work experience placements are detailed in the document LAWS3002 University Insurance Arrangements which is located on the MySCU learning site for this unit. As soon as practicable, the unit assessor will contact the placement supervisor to confirm that the details of the placement are recorded for insurance purposes prior to the placement commencing. Students must also complete and sign a Placement Agreement with their Placement Supervisor, and provide this to the unit assessor as soon as practicable after they have commenced their placement.
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
|On completion of this unit, students should be able to:|
|1||demonstrate professional and ethical conduct in the practice of law;|
|2||have completed no less than 15 days of full-time practical experience in the areas described in the syllabus;|
|3||demonstrate reflective learning and evaluate their placement experiences; and|
|4||demonstrate high order skills in legal research and critical evaluation on issues (both legal and non-legal) related to their placement.|
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
