Unit description

Students are introduced to the Australian legal system. Students also gain an understanding of several key areas of law relating to business and commerce including tort law (negligence and misrepresentation) and business structures. Because contracts and consumer rights underpin business and commerce, students focus on the law of contract and related statutes such as the Australian Consumer Law.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate an understanding of the Australian legal system and its significance to business and commerce
2explain relevant statute and common law in relation to defective products and misrepresentations in business and commerce
3explain the key principles of contract law and the influence of consumer protection legislation
4describe the law regarding sole traders, partnerships and companies

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
