Unit description

Introduces students to the law relating to interests in real property by presenting an overview of the history of land law from its beginnings in mediaeval England to present day Australia. It intends to familiarise students with the way in which these interests in real property are transferred.

Unit content

Module 1: Land Law concepts and successive interests
Module 2: Native title
Module 3: Concurrent interests 
Module 4: The Torrens system 
Module 5: Dealings in land - leases and mortgages 
Module 6: Dealings in land - easements and covenants 

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1distinguish between the various types of real property interests and systems of title that exist in New South Wales today
2recognise the legislative framework in which the various interests in land exist and the significant implications that arise from the different types of interests in land
3identify the documents required to transfer interests in land
4communicate effectively, accurate information about land law.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
