In order to meet the training and assessment requirements prescribed by the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS), students are required to attend a compulsory three-day online practicum plus perform in the role of mediator for a minimum of 1.5 hours.

Unit description

Examines the theory and spirit of mediation and the practical application of mediation skills. Student will examine the techniques to help resolve disputes and build the knowledge, skills and ethical practice required to meet the training component of the National Mediator Accreditation Standards (NMAS). Through reflective practice and roleplay simulations, students will examine the role of the mediator in the NMAS facilitative model and be required to display a practical application of various mediation skills required to respond to a range of disputes.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, ethical practices and legal requirements to facilitate the mediation process and perform the role of the mediator

demonstrate understanding of the nature of conflict, including the dynamics of power and violence, communication patterns in conflict and negotiation situations, and the influence of cross-cultural issues

determine the suitability of participants and demonstrate various mediator interventions and practical strategies to facilitate a safe and balanced environment throughout the mediation process

demonstrate knowledge, skills and ethical practice relating to mediator impartiality and confidentiality of the mediator process.
