Unit description

Introduces students to the legal system, business law and corporations law. It is important for all persons, accountants and business administrators to have an appreciation of the role played by law in regulating society and the business community. The unit provides students with knowledge of the legal system and sources of law in Australia. Students will be expected to use statutes, cases and other legal material to help them analyse legal situations, with a focus on business cases.

  • Contract Law 2
  • Agency, Business Structures, Company incorporation and its consequences
  • Company internal rules and membership
  • Company management, corporate insolvency

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1Recognise the structure of the legal system and identify the sources of law in Australia
2Analyse the key principles and features of contract law
3Identify and analyse the legal aspects of business transactions, partnerships, and companies, particularly in respect of the rights, obligations, duties and liabilities of agents, partners, company members and directors
4Recognise and analyse the legal issues related to separate legal entity, formation, operation, administration and winding up of a company

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
