Unit description

Introduces students to the fundamentals of motion of particles and rigid bodies in a plane under the action of kinematic constraints, forces, couples and impacts. Students undertake individual modelling and analysis of mechanical systems.

Unit content

  1. Kinematics of a particle
  2. Kinematics of a particle: Force and acceleration
  3. Kinematics of a particle: Work and energy
  4. Planar kinematics of a rigid body
  5. Planar kinematics of a rigid body: Force and acceleration
  6. Planar kinematics of a rigid body: Work and energy

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1apply fundamental concepts of Newtonian dynamics in plane motion
2describe the limits of the theory presented so that the material can be appropriately applied or extended
3apply skills to enable mathematical modelling and analysis of simple engineering dynamic systems
4apply problem-solving skills in situations where dynamically-generated forces and motions are significant.

Southern Cross University employs different teaching methods within units to provide students with the flexibility to choose the mode of learning that best suits them. SCU academics strive to use the latest approaches and, as a result, the learning modes and materials may change. The most current information regarding a unit will be provided to enrolled students at the beginning of the teaching period.
