Unit description
Further develops the study of engineering dynamics. The focus is on machines, associated mechanisms, and vibration. Emphasis is on the dynamic forces within machines and their significance with respect to the equipment they drive, are driven by or are mounted on. An industry-standard software package is used for modelling, complex calculations and visualisation. Some guided self-learning is expected.
Unit content
Revision of ordinary differential equations
Introduction to MATLAB and Simulink
Free and forced vibration of single degree-of-freedom systems
Vibration of multi-degree-of-freedom systems
Vibration measurement
Vibration transmission and isolation
Modal analysis
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | GA1 | GA2 | GA3 | GA4 | GA5 | GA6 | GA7 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | understand the conceptual, analytical and mathematical limits of the theoretical techniques so that they can be applied appropriately | Intellectual rigour | Knowledge of a discipline | |||||
2 | develop skills to enable mathematical modelling and analysis of dynamic phenomena in machines using MATLAB | Intellectual rigour | Knowledge of a discipline | |||||
3 | develop problem solving skills in situations where dynamically generated forces and motions are significant | Knowledge of a discipline | ||||||
4 | develop skills in effectively and safely using equipment in a team environment for experimental investigation and measurement of dynamics phenomena, and in reporting findings | Knowledge of a discipline | Communication and social skills | |||||
5 | understand the application of dynamics in mechanical engineering professional practice. | Communication and social skills |
