Unit description

Provides students with the fundamental theory of mechanical design and how to apply this in designing and analysing a wide range of machine components. Students will gain an understanding of the basic and advanced elements used in machine design. These include the characteristics of gears, bearings, shafts, keys, fasteners, weldments, springs, brakes and clutches, and flexible elements. It also provides analytical and case-based knowledge to make machines as integrated systems of machine elements.

Design, manufacture and assembly of basic machine elements

Materials

Machine frames

Welded, adhesive and bolted joints, fasteners

Stepped shafts

Rolling element bearings

Gear mechanics and manufacture

Design for strength

Design for other mechanical failure modes including fatigue, stress concentration

Safety, ergonomics and standards

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1design typical machine components and joints against possible modes of failure, including yield, fracture and fatigue
2apply formal procedures of engineering design and the methods for choosing between competing alternatives, and develop skills in recording design calculations and reasoning in a workbook
3demonstrate an understanding of safety issues, risk management and legal responsibility in engineering design
4conduct and document design work as a team using CAD software package.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. design typical machine components and joints against possible modes of failure, including yield, fracture and fatigue
