Unit description

Unit builds on introductory thermodynamics and fluid mechanics units to further students’ understanding of the fundamentals of classical thermodynamics and heat transfer, and covers applications in mechanical engineering thermal systems.  This unit  introduces  power cycles, refrigeration, air conditioning, and combustion. Modes of heat transfer and heat exchanger design are addressed.

Unit content

  1. Basics of Heat Transfer and Heat Conduction
  2. Steady Heat Conduction and Transient Heat Conduction
  3. Fundamentals of Convection and External Forced Convection
  4. Internal Forced Convection and Natural Convection
  5. Boiling and Condensation and Heat Exchangers
  6. Fundamentals of Thermal Radiation and Radiation Heat Transfer

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1identify and explain the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer
2analyse thermal engineering problems in terms of the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer
3model and solve thermodynamics and heat transfer problems
4understand the application of thermodynamics and heat transfer in mechanical engineering professional practice.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. identify and explain the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer
  2. analyse thermal engineering problems in terms of the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer
  3. model and solve thermodynamics and heat transfer problems
  4. understand the application of thermodynamics and heat transfer in mechanical engineering professional practice.
