Unit description

Builds on the level of understanding obtained in the units of Microbiology and Immunology. There is an increased focus on diagnosis and control of infectious diseases in humans, and on analysis and interpretation of complex microbiological data. Students will develop investigative and analytical skills and be able to solve clinical cases related to infectious diseases.

Unit content

  • Laboratory management and collection procedures for clinical specimens.
  • Bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections of the body systems.
  • Pulmonary and systemic opportunistic infections.
  • Clinical virology.
  • Antimicrobial drugs.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1identify and distinguish among common human microbial pathogens and normal flora
2summarise and compare human microbial infectious diseases
3apply conventional and modern methods for diagnosing and controlling bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections
4solve a series of clinical cases in human infectious diseases of the soft tissues, respiratory, and urogenital tracts and complete clinical laboratory reports
5solve a series of clinical cases in human infectious diseases of the digestive system and complete clinical laboratory reports
6solve a series of clinical cases in human infectious diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular systems and complete clinical laboratory reports
7evaluate specimen collection procedures.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. identify and distinguish among common human microbial pathogens and normal flora
  2. summarise and compare human microbial infectious diseases
  3. apply conventional and modern methods for diagnosing and controlling bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections
