Unit description

Equips students with the knowledge to be able to assist the childbearing woman and her family achieve the optimal transition to parenthood. Students will learn about the psychophysiological factors and physiological changes that impact the well woman during her transition to parenthood. That is, during the preconception, conception, pregnancy and labour and birth and the early postnatal period. Students will also study the role of midwifery in advocating for women, their partners and family underpinned by the concepts of safety and quality in health care and partnering with consumers.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate foundational knowledge to support parents to care for the well newborn.

discuss cultural and social influences on women's experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, and the transition to parenthood.

identify psychophysiological factors impacting childbearing, for well women, from preconception through to the early postnatal period.

discuss the midwife’s role in facilitating choice, promoting an optimal transition to parenthood
