Unit description

Supports students to commence the final midwifery continuity experience and build upon knowledge and skills necessary for cultural safety when working with women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Legal and ethical issues concerning parental rights and the rights of the child are discussed, including the impact on the self of the midwife. Ethical issues around mandatory reporting of a fellow professional are explored. Students will engage in career planning.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1commence and sustain continuity experiences with a minimum of four women
2critically discuss the legal and ethical issues concerning parental and child rights
3critically discuss the barriers for Aboriginal people and CALD communities being able to access culturally safe maternity care, and focus on strategies to create culturally competent services
4engage in career planning
5develop a clear, specific and achievable proposal for internship.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. commence and sustain continuity experiences with a minimum of four women
  2. critically discuss the legal and ethical issues concerning parental and child rights
  3. critically discuss the barriers for Aboriginal people and CALD communities being able to access culturally safe maternity care, and focus on strategies to create culturally competent services
