Unit description

Builds upon knowledge from Well Woman: Pregnancy, Labour and Birth, Postnatal with a focus on fetal and newborn developing complexities during pregnancy, birth and the perinatal period. Students will learn about the detection and management of these complexities in conjunction with the Australian College of Midwives' Consultation and Referral Guidelines.  

Unit content

  1. Prenatal environment and birthing outcomes
  2. Neonatal circulation and extra uterine life
  3. Caring for the unwell neonatal
  4. Babies with congenital or genetic disorders
  5. Babies with developing complexities
  6. Support for woman, her baby and family

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1discuss safe, ethical midwifery practice that supports care of the unwell baby, the woman and family during complex situations
2discuss the pathophysiology and management, including midwifery care, for babies experiencing complex genetic, metabolic or medical conditions
3interpret and explain diagnostic testing and screening results in assessing the unwell baby
4demonstrate competence in medication numeracy for the neonate

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
