Unit description

Promotes extension of knowledge gained from Well-Woman Pregnancy, Labour and Birth, Postnatal and Caring for the Woman during Complex Pregnancy, focusing on existing and developing complexities during labour and birth, and caring for the woman, baby and family/supports.

Unit content

  1. Providing a safe birthing environment when complexities arise
  2. Recognition and response to clinical deterioration in the birthing environment
  3. Existing complexities impacting labour and birthing
  4. Complexities and variations in the timing of labour and or birth
  5. Multiple births, and non-cephalic presentations
  6. Surgical and instrumental births

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1explore and discuss collaborative care principles, and consultation and referral pathways for women and their babies experiencing complexities during labour and birth
2describe the processes involved in the recognition of, and response to clinical deterioration events in the birthing environment
3discuss pharmacological support and medication safety, as well as non-pharmacological or midwifery support strategies, in the birth environment
4describe best practice recommendations and current evidence when caring for a woman experiencing complexities during labour and birth

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
