Unit description

Develops skills to recognise and respond to complex postnatal situations, with clear clinical decision making, drawing on the collaboration of health care professionals, and applying theory and research knowledge. This will assist the midwifery student in supporting and caring for the woman and her baby/babies during the complex postnatal period.

Unit content

  1. Midwifery care in the postnatal period for women with complexities
  2. Women experiencing physiological postnatal challenges
  3. Psychological complexities and adaptations following birth
  4. Collaborative care for women with additional needs in the postnatal period
  5. Supportive follow-up care for the woman with complexities, her baby and family
  6. The midwife and working with women with complexities

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1identify relevant professional and ethical frameworks that underpin midwifery practice when working with women experiencing complex postnatal issues
2outline referral and consultation processes, and follow up care and services, for the new mother with complex postnatal issues
3identify and discuss physiological challenges that women can experience during the postnatal period
4identify and discuss the risk factors for, and midwifery care provided when, women and their baby’s experience psychological complexities and adaptations following birth

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
