Unit description

Provides students with the knowledge and skills to manage the strategy process and to engage in strategic thinking in order to assure the long-term success of an organisation in highly competitive environments. It examines all aspects of the strategy process – strategic analysis, choice and action – and puts it in context. The unit develops skills in analysis, interpretation, communication and evaluation. To accomplish these goals the unit is structured around case analysis of real organisations.

W5. Managing strategic change and the practice of strategy
W6. Organising for success.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1critically discuss the theories, concepts and models of strategic management and its place in the practice of management and business
2think strategically about and analyse an organisation, its context and position, its long-term direction and viability, its capabilities, the effectiveness of its strategy, and its capacity to secure sustainable competitive advantage
3apply strategic management frameworks and tools to conduct strategic analysis, make appropriate strategic choices and implement effective strategies
4develop skills and competences in analysis, interpretation, planning, design, implementation, communication, teamwork and communication
5integrate and synthesise knowledge and skills gained in earlier units and be able to have a sophisticated, whole-of-organisation understanding of strategic practice
6analyse and manage strategy ethically and in proper regard to context, including its relation corporate social responsibility, international and diverse environments, multiple stakeholders and to internal relations and politics.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
