|National Marine Science Centre Coffs Harbour|
The foundational unit provides and overview of scope of marine science and management practices. It introduces students to the specific requirements for life in coastal aquatic environments, biological processes in the ocean and marine resources, as well as the legislative requirements and practices for sustainable use and conservation of the global marine environment. This unit will also help students develop professional skills to become practicing marine scientists.
Provides and overview of:
marine and estuarine life, habitats and processes;
marine conservation and threats;
responsibilities in the marine environment: international, commonwealth and state regulation;
marine resources and sustainable use;
tools and skills for marine scientists.
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
|On completion of this unit, students should be able to:|
|1||demonstrate an understanding of the way abiotic factors control biological processes in the ocean|
|2||describe the marine threats, conservation priorities and management tools for different marine habitats|
|3||apply suitable methods for studying the marine environment|
|4||reflect on the skills and knowledge needed to become a marine scientist and establish a professional portfolio|
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the way abiotic factors control biological processes in the ocean
- describe the marine threats, conservation priorities and management tools for different marine habitats
- apply suitable methods for studying the marine environment
- reflect on the skills and knowledge needed to become a marine scientist and establish a professional portfolio
- No prescribed texts.
