Unit description

Extends the skills and knowledge gained in Performance I and develops intermediate performance skills through the analysis and critique of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic elements of contemporary music repertoire and the application of foundational techniques.

Unit content

Topic 1: OWH & S including hearing loss awareness for ensemble playing; technical exercises to establish a practice routine; chart interpretation, rhythm changes, sight reading and transcription.

Topic 2: Introduction to repertoire; extended harmony; progressions, four-note voicings, quartal and arpeggios; Instrumental role and function.

Topic 3: Scale syllabus; extended chords, four-note voicings and arpeggios;

Topic 4: Repertoire development; introduction to advanced harmonic progressions, altered/chord extensions; rhythmic technical work related to fast tempos, 8th, 16th note straight, swung and syncopated feels.

Topic 5: Advanced improvisation; scale syllabus.

Topic 6: Memorisation, accompanying, chart interpretation and improvisation over advanced harmonic progressions and technical application to swing eighth notes at various tempos. Stagecraft skills.

Topic 7 : Scale syllabus. chart reading, technical work and repertoire memorisation.

Topic 8: Rhythmic focus Latin; jazz: standards, swing, hardbop, ballads and bebop.

Topic 9: Continuation of approaches to improvisation and technical application; stagecraft skills.

Topic 10: Chart reading, technical work and repertoire memorisation.

Topic 11: Exam preparation: advanced stagecraft and ensemble leadership skills.
