Focuses on the composition and performance of original musical works as well as the development of instrumental and vocal virtuosity. This unit culminates in a professional ‘showcase’ live performance.
Topic 1: Introduction to repertoire open to students selected area of specialisation (Electronica, Pop, Rock, Folk, Fusion, World Music, including original compositions/songwriting).
Topic 2: Technical exercises to establish complex melodic lines and professional harmony (polychord voicing and four-note voicings, and arpeggios).
Topic 3: Memorisation, chart interpretation and improvisation over harmonic progressions and 1 chord modal approaches. Scale syllabus (all modes, and a selection from world music scale).
Topic 4: Introduction to professional harmonic progressions, rhythmic development techniques and repertoire development.
Topic 5: Professional improvisation (melodic development, cyclic progressions, creative scale application 'inside and outside', rhythmic applications). Scale syllabus from a variety of genres.
Topic 6: Professional stagecraft skills including (e.g. presentation, band volume, personal dynamics, time management and communication skills).
Topic 7: Scale and chord syllabus (all relevant modes, voicings and from a variety of genres) Professional rhythmic techniques related to soloing (where appropriate).
Topic 8: Application of improvisation skills to selected repertoire. Chart reading, technical work and repertoire.
Topic 9: Continuation of approaches to improvisation in all genres and technical application.
Topic 10: Application of melodic skills to selected repertoire. Chart reading, technical work and repertoire.
Topic 11: Application of rhythmic skills to selected repertoire. Chart reading, technical work and repertoire.
Topic 12: Exam preparation: for professional performance
