Unit description
Introduces students to the physics of sound production and basic electrical engineering concepts associated with analog and digital sound production. Students participate in lectures and workshops gaining practical experience, skills and knowledge in relation to both recording studio and live sound reinforcement environments.
Unit content
- Basic physics of sound, sound perception
- Basic electronic theory, electronic devices
- WHS issues relating to sound levels and electricity, studio and live sound environments
- Studio operation
- Sound system overview
- The venue, equipment, personnel, incorporating live concert staging, fold back and front of house
- Signal flow and cables and connectors
- Transducers, mixers, power amplifiers, equalisers, processors
- Equipment connecting standard, pre-production, set-ups, operation
- Microphone choice, placement and techniques, mixing, equalisation, processing
- The multi-track recording studio, both analog and digital, live band recording
- Computer operation, file management, hard disk recording, audio sound modules, samplers and software plug-ins, CD production, online storage and retrieval
