Unit description

Provides an overview of the changing nature of work within the global music Industry. Students participate in weekly workshops and practical sessions that build foundational knowledge in relation to the historical origins of the music industry, relevant business and legal frameworks and the impact of technology on music promotion and distribution.

Unit content

Module 1: Historical origins of the music industry.

Module 2: Development of music texts as a commercial product.

Module 3: Emergence of copyright and publishing.

Module 4: Impact of technology on music industry organisation.

Module 5: Understanding the changing nature of work within the music industry.

Module 6:  Impact of the Internet on the music industry organisation.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1understand historical and continuing development of business and legal frameworks in the context of the global music industry.
2demonstrate knowledge of commercial concepts and technologies relevant to the continuing development of the global music industry
3investigate key business and legal frameworks utilised within the global music industry
4demonstrate an understanding of changing career patterns and work roles within the global music industry.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
