Unit description

Develops advanced level musicianship skills and knowledge specifically in relation to theory, aural, keyboard and digital musicianship skills. Students learn and apply harmonic, rhythmic and melodic concepts to create music compositions and arrangements, and produce these creative works using notation and/or digital audio workstation software.

Unit content

  • Arranging for small choral ensembles
     
  • Arranging for large choral ensembles
     
  • Advanced music theory: rhythm, harmony and advanced chord/scale relationships. Solo construction
     
  • Orchestration – Small Ensembles
     
  • Orchestration – Large Ensembles
     
  • Orchestration – Large orchestral ensembles. Adapting piano scores.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate composition and arranging techniques appropriate to selected genres, instruments and repertoire
2apply advanced level aural skills in rhythmic, melodic and harmonic perception to the understanding, interpretation and performance of music repertoire and practice
3demonstrate the application of advanced music theory to the composition and arranging of repertoire.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
