Unit description

Learners explore integrative approaches to gut health and organic and functional gastrointestinal disease. Evidence-based, patient-centred approaches are applied to various gastrointestinal conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. Learners appraise current gastrointestinal tests and procedures and are equipped with recognising acute gastrointestinal emergencies.

  1. Organic and functional gastrointestinal disorders
  2. Aetiology of functional and organic gastrointestinal disorders
  3. Tests and procedures used to evaluate gastrointestinal disorders
  4. Integrative health care for the management of gastrointestinal disorders
  5. Integrative approaches for the management of gastrointestinal disorders
  6. Acute gastrointestinal emergencies 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

2critically reflect on the clinical relevance of current gastrointestinal tests and procedures
3critically evaluate integrative approaches for managing gastrointestinal conditions in the chronic and acute phases.
4recognise acute gastrointestinal emergencies and appropriate courses of action suitable to your scope of practice within an integrative health care model

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
